Antlers
"Antlers" LP
Rorschach 07

Debut Record by Richmond\'s Antlers. Antler\'s play primarily instrumental mathy indie stuff more to the tune of bands like Ghost and Vodka. Vocals are minimal and song as a group, they act more like an instrument. The Record was Recorded at Planet Red Studios in Richmond and the band brought in Richmond musicians such as Erin Tobey, Andrew Clock, Taylor Burton, and Chris Dowhan to take the record to some next level shit. The songs are short and too the point kinda like Don Cab for ADD.

Back When
"We Sang As Ghosts" 2xLP
Shock Value 06

\"Back When\'s We Sang as Ghosts might go down as one of the most overlooked records of the year or the next big album in instrumental metal, it\'s hard to say. The mood moves from haunting to inspiring in minutes and back again as no part lingers too long, helping the album play as a collective piece of music and not as a collection of songs. Time will tell if Back When becomes the next \'it\' band in the hardcore/metal scene, or just another overlooked band with amazing talent. One thing for sure is you can only expect more to come from Omaha\'s best-kept secret.\"

I\'m pretty sure this is out of print.

Bolz\'n
"Spaltfunktion" LP
React With Protest 20

IMPORT - GERMANY!

This is some very fucking promising tech-grindcore.talking about majorly intense and frantic grind with wildly chaotic drumming that barely seems to follow the same beat as the guitars, which are ultra fast and a little noisy, but also super detuned for added heaviness. Also in place are layered screaming/growling female vocals (some of the best I\'ve ever heard), crazy technical riffs with plenty of blasting speeds, and lots of weird chord phrasings and rhythmic patterns that really fuck with the structures and make for an odd listen. you ve been warned.

Brainworms & Tubers
"Split" 7"
Rorschach 09

The underground railroad from St. Augustine to Richmond, VA finally comes to listeners in the form of Tuber’s split with the almighty Brainworms. Brainworms unleash two tracks on their 3rd split 7\" in a year, one being Jays Big Date which is the zingiest of zingers yet by the band and the debut of Josh Small on guitar with the band. Track two is a cover of Rites of Spring - For Want Of, recorded at the same time as the live side of Which is Worse. Tubers, who have circuited the Florida punk scene in bands one might call spastic hardcore such as Twelve Hr. Turn, Solid Pony, and Environmental Youth Crunch, find a mellower spot to sit while not letting aggressive tendencies completely fall by the wayside. Tubers are the perfect complement for a party that wants to let loose, have fun, and, you know, maybe get a little weird on the dance floor.(Split release with Bakery Outlet and Dead Tank)

Cobolt
"Passoa" LP
Mi Amante 00

IMPORT - GERMANY!

For a label like BCore it\'s always a honour to release records by non-spanish bands, which means a prove of health of the label beyond our territory. In the case of Cobolt, the happiness is still bigger; not only for how much we like their songs, with their balsamic, almost hipnotic feeling, but for the fact that their guitarist and singer used to play in the yet legendary Refused. That band who headed one of the latest revolutions in the international hardcore scene, and that after its dissolution gave birth to the influent and successful The (International) Noise Conspiracy (in the rocking, retro side) and Cobolt (more introspective and sensual).

This is their fourth album, after their two albums for swedish label Ampersand (\"Eleven Storey Soul Departure\" -1997- and \"Spirit on parole\" -1998), and the out-of-press EP \"A few hours captured\" for BCore. And this new album goes one step further in what some like to call slowcore or slow indie, like Codeine, Seam, Low or Red House Painters, always looking for that nostalgic, sensitive peak, downbeating the listener with desolation at its purest. Slower than ever, more melancholic and athmospheric, their songs create ambients every day more personal and unique. A true delicatessen from these four warm-blood swedish romantics.

Haram
"Haram" LP
Adagio 830 13

Haram (ex-Majority Rule, Pageninetynine, City of Caterpillar) comprises seasoned veterans whose foray into territory most reminiscent of Drive Like Jehu and Sonic Youth is informed by the urgent ferocity of their previous bands. Jim Siegel recorded their first, self-titled LP, in Stoughton, Massachusetts. On this spectacular debut, Haram mines disparate facets of punk and noise to conjure something wholly cohesive and engaging. Matt Michel and Mike Taylor\'s dual guitars roil and churn, while Kevin Lamiell and Andy Gale form a kinetic and explosive rhythm section on bass and drums, respectively. Unrelenting and forward, Haram possesses a mature, tempered confidence that only comes with experience and do-it-yourself resolve. Their first full-length effort is truly a moody and atmospheric masterpiece.

Headlights
"The Enemies EP" LP
Mi Amante 01

Headlights are at the forefront of the resurgent scene happening in the twin cities of Champaign-Urbana. By exhibiting an uncanny ability to merge electronics with the barest of pop elements, they carve a unique niche for themselves that falls nicely between My Bloody Valentine and The Postal Service. Originally released as a limited edition CD EP, the band sold over 1,500 copies of \"The Enemies EP\" through two national tours and sales on the Polyvinyl web site. This release paves the way for their forthcoming full-length. Headlights have played with The Delgados, Headphones, Mates Of State, Mono, Crooked Fingers, Earlimart, and Explosions In The Sky.

Neil on Impression
"The Perfect Tango" LP
Life In A Box 06

IMPORT - FROM ITALY!

Ignore the rather rum band name and the slightly mis-selling album title, this is yet another entry into the now worryingly overweight 2006 post-rock pile! Taking cues from Explosions in the Sky, Mono and from the sounds of it Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Neil on Impression have got their ‘quiet-louds’ in check, and have a string section on call for those emotional moments. The production is of course utterly impeccable which actually is one of the things I can level against it, there’s something overwhelmingly glossy about ‘The Perfect Tango’ which in my opinion is always a mistake for this kind of post rock. Everyone knows the best in the genre; Mogwai’s early work, Godspeed’s early EPs, Do Make Say Think etc revelled in a glorious lo-fi production which gave the tracks an anti-commercial edge which I rather fell in love with. Beautifully composed, impeccably played and just the right length, ‘The Perfect Tango’ is a perfect example of how perfection is rarely ever all it’s cracked up to be.

First full length struggle delivers 15 tracks of straight forward grindcore sound but takes it to a higher level by mixing it with melodic guitar sounds and heavy chugga breakdowns. Produced by the infamous dirk kusche (moerser, systral, absidia) it\'s extremely heavy and contains everything from blastbeats to midtempo driven melodies. All layout work is done by szandor kubassa (legacy zine, ox zine, as we fight). The lyrics mostly deal with politics, abuse of power and personal views on grievances in society.

The Bold and the Beautiful & Tunguska
"Split" LP
Trująca Fala 96

IMPORT - POLAND and IRELAND!

The Bold and the Beautiful started in autumn 2004 with a few members of punk bands from Lublin area (AntiChrist, Silence, G.C.M., Poem After Auschwitz, Unanimous Society\'s Paradox, AntiCop), cause guys were just pissed off on polish specific lifestyle, political madness, religious frauds and attitudes of scene gestapo/scene merchandise of some dumbs. They had an idea to connect fast and angry punkrock with old style sarcasm in the vein of early \'80 hardcore and with political but not always deadly serious lyrics. In total - two guitars, two screamers, one bass and one drums. They call it Gitwa Punk and if you like Siekiera (a polish old punk \"legend\") you know what they mean – fast and furious crusty powerviolence, aggressive and in your face. On the other side of the split you find Tunguska – Irish/Polish hybride with heavy and dark monumental neocrust mayhem. Totally devastating and powerful wall of sound in the vein of Silence, FAR, The Dagda etc.

The Catalyst & Brainworms

Rorschach 06

A release worth a year of waiting. Two of Richmond, Va\'s finest bands come together on this split 7\". The Catalyst deliver 3 new songs written as a 3 piece. On this record the Catalyst bring to mind bands like Tragedy with a more fast sound and dueling vocals between members. On the other side Richmond\'s Brainworms laid down two of their best tracks yet \"Winnie Cooper\" and \"Art thou Bored\". Both tracks have showed how much this band has evolved in writing since last years records. The art is a unique collaboration by Richmond artist Jim Callahan and Nick Kuszyk. You will have more fun looking at this art than playing Where\'s Waldo.

The Critic & Devices

These songs collectively make up the split. The critic is members of VAN JOHNSON and have members from canada and new hampshire and new jersey of the united states. A few summers ago they toured the US with welcome the plague year and ten and two (with whom the critic released a split 7\" with for the tour). As for devices, they have toured various parts of the US now about 4 or 5 times and this summer and fall doing even more touring. They are compromised of ex. jesse washington (who once did a split with tunes for bears to dance to). they play really well driven post-punk/screamo with poetic lyrics while the critic play post-hardcore with some climatic build ups similar to that of city of caterpillar and welcome the plague year.

The Grey
"Asleep At the Wheel" LP
Adagio 830 14

The Grey is a powerful, melodic rock quartet that periodically delves into experimental tangents. With influences ranging from Fugazi, the Jesus Lizard, Seaweed, Drive Like Jehu, and Juno to Tom Petty, The MC5, Neil Young, and Nick Cave, one can be assured that hints of styles, new and established, can be found in their post-rock stylings. Formed in the spring of 2003 in Ottawa, Canada, The Grey turned sporadic practices among old friends in a sweltering attic into a weekly ritual. This allowed the members of previous bands such as Shotmaker, Three Penny Opera, and Buried Inside to assemble a new musical group. Asleep at the Wheel, their first full-length, is an energetic blast of raw feeling and forward thinking. One of the highlights of The Grey\'s debut is their ability to meld effortlessly different musical elements and influences into something wholly satisfying and engaging. The Grey\'s music on Asleep at the Wheel is at once cerebral and violently passionate, a quality often sorely lacked by their musical peers.

The Shadow Government

Scenster Credentials 08

ft (The Shadow Government) formerly know as \"Flaccid Trip\" have set to music the sounds of a new area of military governments and the cries of the people they rule. Recorded by Mike Lust in Chicago and by FT the SG in Iowa City at flat black studios. \"Guns of August\" is a sonic call to arms that incorporates all styles of music in its attempt to break down genres and topple governments. FT the SG\'s band members read more like a list of old war veterans with members of: Ten Grand, Forstella Ford, Tornavalanche, and Head of Femur. Also, inlisted for this recording were: Nathan (call me lightning), Connor (shedding), and Bob and Zach (tornavalanche). With plenty of fire power behind them FT the SG is armed to restore order to music and the rest of the world. Wake up sheeple!
